Time for a little TLC

A lot happened during 2014. VauxWall opened, the boys and I moved houses, Louis started school and I rediscovered my love for sport climbing!

I pushed hard. Worked lots and rested little. I tried my best to juggle all aspects of my crazy busy life until my body responded in a negative way with a quite serious back injury (slipped disk).

After numerous visits to different specialists, hospitals, MRI scan and even the mention of surgery, it was decided after a small hospital procedure (an anti inflammatory injection on my spine) that we would take advantage of my long trip to Brazil to give my body a chance to heal itself.

I must confess I was feeling pretty down by the beginning of December and a break from everything in the sunshine and surrounded by the love of my family was more than needed.

We had an amazing time in Brazil but although I was meant to take it easy I wouldn’t feel relaxed or happy and comfortable with myself by just resting!

So in between parties, eating great food and catching up with friends, I visited my sister’s gym, consulted a personal trainer and did some basic work outs to maintain a certain level of fitness I wasn’t prepared to loose!

There, I was reminded of how much I love the warm Brazilian sea and its beaches. My favourite being Maracaípe, situated South of Recife near the famous beach of Porto de Galinhas. There and in Cupe I fell in love with surfing! I did a lot of bodyboarding when I was a teenager but for some reason I haven’t done much surfing and since I had a couple of nasty falls in 2011, I haven’t been back on the board. I just can’t believe I wasted so much time!

Without much pretentiousness and armed by some great advice from my friend Sergio Henrique I managed to catch some lovely waves and I’m totally hooked! Shame surfing is not very accessible if you leave in Tunbridge Wells. But it will be definitely something else (other than climbing of course) I’ll be planning to do during some of my 2015 holidays!

Another cool sport I discovered and totally new to me was the Stand Up Paddle which is becoming quite popular in Brazil. This is me enjoying the beautiful sunset paddling in the river by the manguezal of Maracaípe.

Now I’m back to the UK. Batteries recharged and eager to get back in action. Whether my back is ready I am not sure. Only time will tell me. Fingers crossed!
